She brought us Gray’s Anatomy and Scandal into our world, she built a tv empire and now she just blew your mind with the best “Just Do It” speech you have ever heard. It will #makeyoufeelhappy.
She may have crushed and eaten your heart when she killed your favorite characters in Gray’s Anatomy, or given you the most unexpected plot twists in How To Get Away With Murder; nevertheless, Shonda Rhimes is one, talented woman who built her career as a TV-writer through hard work and dedication, ending up on top of an actual tv empire: Shondaland.
Even though she wrote Meredith Gray’s cheesy and sometimes cliché monologues, Shonda stepped on the stage as a Darthmouth alumni and gave a wonderful, candid speech to hundreds of graduates.
In just 24 minutes, Shonda talks about her drive and commitment to “doing something” with her life. Starting her academic career with the intention of becoming a successful writer, Shonda’s life took an incredible turn, when she threw herself into the world of tv writing, and realized that she had discovered a completely different world, where she could magically make her fantasies come into life.
The speech is not only inspiring because it comes from a successful person who has followed her intuition, but because Shonda is really blunt with the crowd and her message is loud and clear: Stop dreaming, start doing.
Dreams are lovely. But they are just dreams — fleeting, ephemeral, pretty. But dreams do not come true just because you dream them — it’s hard work that makes things happen. It’s hard work that creates change. So… ditch the dream and be a doer, not a dreamer. (Shonda Rhimes)
Dreaming, picturing yourself doing incredible things and hiking the Everest can boost your imagination and increase your determination. But sometimes dreams hit you hard, because they are just what they are: dreams. We all wish to be more successful, learn a new language, or exceed at a sport; but how hard do we work towards that goal?
Most of the time we are so busy dreaming and exhausted from all the imagination that we use that there is barely any left to use working on our actual dreams.
So if you’re a dreamer and you have been putting off writing that novel, or chasing that job, or doing anything else that requires working towards your super-duper goal; Shonda’s speech is absolutely perfect for you. It contains the right dose of humour to make you laugh and the right amount of wisdom to keep you uplifted throughout the rest of the day.
If you don’t have 24 minutes to watch the video, read this adorable comic based on Shonda’s speech, created by the talented Zen Pencils.
So the key messages of today are:
- Stop wishing for things to get better, or to be different; start working for them.
- Life never turns out how you expect it to be. So be flexible and make the most of each opportunity you have been given.
- Happy, successful and motivated people work their asses off to get to where they are. So you better start doing.
